Recognition for Messalonskee High School alum Nick Mayo’s first year at Eastern Kentucky University continued to pour in on Friday when the National Association of Basketball Coaches named him to its All District-19 second team.
Mayo, a 6-foot-9 forward who was named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Freshman of the Year and earned first team all-conference honors, ranked 18th nationally in field goal percentage (60.7 percent) and was the only Colonel to start all 31 games. He averaged 14.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting 55.6 percent from three-point range and 80.2 percent from the foul line.
The Oakland native finished third on the team in scoring. Jarelle Reischel, the Colonels’ leading scorer, was also named to the district’s second team.
