Back in the 1940s radio station WTVL was operated by Carlton Brown. One of his daily features was a “man on the street” program, a 15-minute program in which Brown interviewed passersby on Main Street in Waterville. Occasionally he would venture out of town to interview interesting people beyond his customary area.

In one of those interviews he talked to an elderly gentlemen I believe in the town of New Portland. This man had reached the age of 104. During the course of the interview Carlton commented, “I guess you’ve seen a lot of changes in your lifetime.” That was most probably so because the gentleman was born in the 1830s. The man replied, “Yes, sir, and I was agin every GD one of ’em!”

I first voted in the presidential election when Harry Truman was challenged by Thomas E. Dewey, and now I feel that that elderly gentleman was 100 percent right on, especially when I consider the current presidential campaign.
