SMITHFIELD — A fire that destroyed a Village Road home Thursday morning was caused by an electrical issue and started in the area of a dryer in the basement of the house, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
Investigator Jeremy Damren said Friday afternoon the fire was accidental and was not suspicious.
Firefighters from five towns responded to the 9 a.m. fire at 668 Village Road.
Homeowner Penny Petrucelli and her boyfriend, Paul, who also lived there, have been in touch with the American Red Cross and are staying at a motel, according to Smithfield Fire Chief John Easler.
The couple could not be reached for comment Friday, and no one was at the residence Friday afternoon.
Two cats that were in the house at the time of the fire made it out safely and there were no injuries reported. The house was still standing Friday, but Easler said he doubts the couple can salvage any of their belongings.
“I’d say the house is totaled,” he said.
Firefighters from Belgrade, Norridgewock, Rome and Oakland joined the Smithfield department at the scene.
