Two shot-putters from central Maine enjoyed memorable starts to their outdoor track and field seasons throwing for Bates College at a tri-meet with the University of Maine and University of New Hampshire in Orono.

Senior Nick Margitza of Waterville took first place in the shot put with a new personal record of 53-feet, 10.5-inches. He eclipsed his previous mark by 3.5 inches and won the meet by more than seven feet over runner-up Jeremy Frantz of Maine.

Margitza also finished second in the hammer throw, with a personal best throw of 179-07, and seventh in the discus. He was named New England Small College Athletic Conference Field Performer of the Week for the first time and is currently fourth in the shot put and sixth in the hammer in early season Division III rankings.

Freshman Katie Hughes, of Pittsfield, moved into 10th place on Bates’ all-time list in the shot put with a throw of 35-5. Maine sophomore Rachel Bergeron of Waterville was fourth (36-00.25).

Hughes was also fifth in the discus and ninth in the hammer.

Among other central Maine athletes with top-five finishes at the meet, Maine junior Ahlin Sungsuwan, of Fairfield, was third in the 800-meter run and Maine sophomore Alexa Frame, of Belgrade Lakes, was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles.

The Maine women and New Hampshire men won the meet.

The Colby men’s lacrosse team beat Maine Maritime 27-3 on Tuesday, setting a program record for goals in a game. Fifteen players scored for the Mules (3-7), who eclipsed their previous mark of 24 set twice in 1986 against Southern Maine and New Hampshire College.

Kevin Seiler scored four goals to lead the Mules while William Erwin, Harrison Alpaugh and Thomas Brewster each added three.

The University of Maine at Farmington men’s and women’s track and field teams continued to announce their presence in their inaugural season by finishing third and fourth overall, respectively, at the Jim Sheehan Invitational hosted by Fitchburg State University on Saturday.

Senior Sean Cabaniss, of Vassalboro, led the men with a pair of second-place finishes in the long jump and triple jump. Sophomore Shane Hathaway, of Pittsfield, garnered three top-five finishes by placing fourth in the 110-meter hurdles, fifth in the 400-meter hurdles and fifth in the triple jump. For his efforts, Hathaway, a Maine Central Institute alum, was named North Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Week.

Cabaniss, Hathaway and Messalonskee alum Jesse Enos, who finished seventh in the high jump, helped the Beavers finish in first amongst all NAC schools in the meet.

Erskine graduate Bridget Humphrey helped lead the UMF women by placing fourth in the discus. She added fifth-place finishes in the high jump and long jump.

Assumption won both the men’s and women’s meets, which featured 16 men’s and 18 women’s teams.

Colby women’s lacrosse picked up where it left off in the month of March and is riding high with a six-game winning streak as it begins a four-game home stand on Wednesday against Keene State.

The eighth-ranked Mules swept back-to-back games against Wesleyan and Wellesley last weekend to improve to 7-1 on the season. Junior Lexie Perticone powered the offense with two goals and an assist in the 7-3 NESCAC victory over Wesleyan on Saturday and three goals and two assists in the 12-6 non-conference triumph over Wellesley on Sunday. She scored her five goals for the weekend on just six shots and leads the Mules with 13 goals, five assists and 18 points.

Colby’s only loss came on March 12 at defending conference champion Trinity, when it fell 13-3. It is 4-1 in conference play.

The Mules have played just one game on Bill Alfond Field so far this season. After facing Keene State, they’ll host NESCAC foes Amherst, Bowdoin and Williams before hitting the road for their final three games of the regular season, starting with an April 20 non-conference date with University of New England in Biddeford.

Thomas College freshman Sydney LeBourveau was named NAC Softball Rookie of the Week for the week ending April 3. LeBourveau, a pitcher/utility player from Jericho, Vermont, hit .500 (3-for-6) last week with a home run, four RBIs, a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in two losses to Endicott on Thursday. She drove in the Terriers’ only runs in a 5-2 loss in Game 1, then homered and drew a bases-loaded walk in a 5-4 Game 2 loss.
