A 14-year-old Auburn boy who is accused of attacking a neighbor with a hammer was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder.
Auburn police said the attack Tuesday evening at a home on Huard Avenue left a 56-year-old man hospitalized with serious injuries. The victim, whose name is not being released, had surgery at Central Maine Medical Center and is in satisfactory condition, according to a press release on the police department’s Facebook page.
Police said the attack appears to be random. They said the 14-year-old has a history of violent outbursts. He is charged with elevated aggravated assault and attempted murder. The boy is being held at the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland pending his initial court appearance.
The incident remains under investigation by Auburn police. The victim and the boy knew each other.
