Fayette’s trash and recyclables will stop going to the town of Jay’s transfer station at the end of June and head to Readfield instead.

Fayette selectmen voted unanimously recently to become a customer of the Readfield/Wayne transfer station, which is on North Road in Readfield.

Earlier this year, Jay announced it was closing its transfer station to outsiders.

Under the yearlong arrangement that is to begin July 1, Fayette will pay about $40,000 in disposal and access fees to the Readfield/Wayne station. Fayette currently pays Jay $39,000 in annual tipping and disposal fees.

Those figures don’t include the much larger cost of waste collection, which is listed as $147,300 under both plans.

Figures included in the proposal from Readfield and Wayne show that Fayette and its 491 households pay almost $187,000 to have their waste deposited in Jay, and that the first year as a customer of the Readfield/Wayne transfer station would run almost $188,000.

Fayette Town Manager Mark Robinson said the tipping fee to be paid to Readfield “is based on what our real-life tonnage has been when sending our trash to the Jay station.”

People in Fayette contract to have their trash picked up by one of three private haulers — Archie’s, of Mexico; J & A Disposal, of Jay; and Fran Trask, of Manchester — at $25 per month.

The yearlong customer status for Fayette is expected to be a temporary measure as the three towns then negotiate a contract with the aim of making Fayette a partner in the transfer station operation.

If that partnership materializes, Robinson indicated in an email, residents could have the option to haul their own trash beginning in July 2017. That would result in significant savings for individual households, according to the contract.

In sending the agreement to Fayette on behalf of the other two towns, Readfield Town Manager Eric Dyer noted, “Although more work is certainly before us, we are truly excited about this offer because of the many opportunities that exist for all of our communities.”
