The Boston Red Sox announced that relief pitcher Carson Smith will have Tommy John surgery Tuesday on his right elbow.

Smith, 26, was traded by the Seattle Mariners to the Red Sox last winter. The right-hander suffered a forearm strain in spring training and was placed on the disabled list heading into the 2016 season.

Smith pitched in just three games for Boston, and appeared in two games with the Portland Sea Dogs during an injury rehab assignment in late April.
