INDUSTRY – A single-family home on Taylor Michael Road was destroyed by a fire Tuesday morning, and investigators cannot determine the cause because of the extent of the damage.

The fire was reported by a passerby around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. The home, owned by Anthony and Melissa Howard, is off Route 43 near the Starks-Industry town line.

The home is across the street from where a forest fire broke out last month.

No one was home at the time of the fire, Industry Fire Chief Kevin Gurney said. The home was completely engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

Because of the extent of the damage, the state’s fire marshal’s office couldn’t conduct an investigation into the cause of the fire and is listing the cause as undetermined, Gurney said.

The water used to douse the blaze had to be trucked in from Clearwater Lake, a few miles down the road.

The single-story home was insured. A disaster response team from the Red Cross of Maine met with the family to ensure they had a safe place to stay and will help them with referrals, according to a news release from the Red Cross.

Fire crews from Industry, Farmington, New Sharon, Temple, New Vineyard, Anson, Madison and Starks responded to the fire.
