A purse that was stolen from a Vassalboro woman in April recently was recovered after investigators found it in the car belonging to a Boothbay woman, police said.

The purse was found after the woman was arrested on unrelated charges after an incident on Southport Island, according to a news release from Lt. Michael Murphy of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

On May 24, the woman, 48-year-old Eva Mae Todd, was arrested by a detective from the sheriff’s office on charges of burglary and theft.

Police made the arrest after investigating several reported burglaries on Newagen Road on Southport Island. A resident of the neighborhood alleged that Todd recently had been seen walking in the neighborhood and carrying a bag of clothing, according to Murphy. At the time, Todd also was allegedly wearing clothes that had been reported stolen.

When police confronted Todd, she allegedly fled in her car, a green Saab convertible. When Todd’s car was blocked in by another vehicle, she drove over rocks and a lawn to get away, Murphy added.

Boothbay Harbor Police and a detective from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office later stopped and arrested Todd on the burglary and theft charges, Murphy said. Her car was towed and impounded, and Todd was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset. She was released later on bail.

The Vassalboro woman’s missing purse allegedly was found when investigators executed a search warrant on Todd’s vehicle, according to Murphy. Maine State Police had been investigating that reported theft.

Police continue to investigate those incidents, as well as a possible theft in Bowdoin, Murphy said. Anyone with relevant information is asked to call Detective Scott Hayden at 882-7332.
