Local law enforcement officers carried the torch for the Special Olympics through the area on Thursday.
The annual Maine Law Enforcement Torch Run began Tuesday in Sanford and is scheduled to end on Friday with a final leg to the University of Maine campus in Orono, according to the event’s Facebook page.
Early Thursday morning, Monmouth Police Chief Kevin Mulherin and two others ran with the torch on U.S. Route 202 in Monmouth headed toward Winthrop. There they handed the torch to game wardens in Manchester, who took it to Augusta. Another leg came up from the south through Richmond, Gardiner, Farmingdale and Hallowell on the way to Augusta. There they combined and headed north toward Vassalboro.
The events across the state are a fundraiser and prelude to the Special Olympics Maine State Summer Games meet this weekend in Orono. Close to 1,500 athletes and coaches will be on the campus to compete in the four-day event, according to the Special Olympics Maine website.
