AUGUSTA — A 21-year-old Clinton man was sentenced Tuesday to an initial one year behind bars for a crime spree in April that included assaulting a man by breaking his hand and breaking into businesses in Waterville and Winslow.
The remainder of the four-year sentence for Christian C. Greaves was suspended.
Greaves pleaded guilty to a number of charges Tuesday afternoon at a hearing at the Capital Judicial Center. Justice Robert Mullen imposed the sentence recommended by both the prosecutor and the defense attorney, and told the victim with the broken hand that Greaves’ “margin of error in the future is going to be slim to none.”
The year in prison is to be followed by two years of probation.
The 65-year-old victim was in the courtroom. He told the judge he was “doing fine” now and did not want to speak in court. He said he had nothing to say about the sentence.
Greaves had pleaded guilty earlier to the assault, which occurred April 22 on Spring Street in Waterville.
Assistant District Attorney Francis Griffin said Greaves grabbed the man’s walking cane and swung it at him, hitting him in the hand before throwing the cane to the ground. The victim had been walking his dog at the time.
A report by Waterville police indicates Greaves was with a group of young people, including juveniles.
Greaves also pleaded guilty to burglary, theft, violating conditions of release and two counts of criminal mischief, which occurred April 13 in Waterville.
He pleaded guilty to theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, burglary of a motor vehicle, criminal trespass and violating conditions of release, which occurred April 14 and included theft of money from Babe’s Shoe Repair.
Greaves also pleaded guilty to burglary, theft and violating conditions of release which occurred April 5 in Winslow, and involved a break-in at Bee’s Snack Bar in Winslow. Griffin said Greaves was identified as a suspect after police viewed video surveillance footage from a store across the street.
Greaves was ordered to pay restitution totaling $900.99.
