A Newport man wanted on seven charges was arrested Wednesday after police say they discovered him hiding in a bed’s box spring at a Hart Street residence, according to the Newport police chief.
Zachary McFarlin, 21, was arrested on warrants for failure to appear in court, issuing a false public alarm, violating conditions of release, domestic violence assault on two counts, unlawful sexual contact and cruelty to animals. He was also arrested on new charges of assault on an officer, resisting arrest and violating conditions of release, said Newport police Chief Leonard Macdaid.
“We’ve been looking for him for a couple of months; he’s pretty dangerous,” Macdaid said. “He actually set up his bed so he could get inside his bed. We located him inside the actual bed, inside the box spring.”
Police from Newport and the Maine State Police as well as an investigator from the Penobscot County District Attorney’s Office executed a search warrant for McFarlin on Wednesday morning at his home on Hart Street in Newport and found him hiding in the box spring.
Four other people, including two juveniles, also were arrested. A 14-year-old girl was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear in court and a 16-year-old girl was arrested on a charge of assaulting a police officer.
Kelli McFarlin, Zachary McFarlin’s mother, 39, of Newport, was arrested on charges of hindering apprehension and violating conditions of release.
Rylee Graves, 18, of Newport, also was arrested on a charge of violating conditions of release.
Macdaid said McFarlin resisted arrest and struggled to get away from officers Wednesday.
A state police officer was attacked and bitten by a dog at the home. The officer was treated at the scene and was not taken to the hospital, but Macdaid said “it was a significant dog bite.”
The dog has been quarantined and police are still determining what will be done with it.
The original charges against McFarlin originate from several agencies, and Macdaid said he did not have details about them. Phone calls to the Penobscot County District Attorney’s Office were not returned Wednesday.
McFarlin was taken to the Penobscot County Jail. Macdaid did not know what his bail was but said he expects it to be high.
“He’s got quite a few charges on him. At this point I don’t think they will let him bail, I’m assuming,” Macdaid said.
