A motorcyclist was seriously injured Friday morning when his bike collided with a car on Route 3 in South China.

The man, whose name was not released immediately, was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta and was to be taken by helicopter from there to another hospital, rescue workers at the scene said.

Police said a juvenile, who was not hurt, was driving the car that collided with the motorcycle. No names were released pending notification of families.

The accident, which happened shortly after 9:30 a.m. near the intersections of Route 32 and U.S. Route 202, backed up traffic on busy Route 3, the east-west route from Augusta to the coast.

The initial cause was believed to be failure to yield on the motorcyclist’s part, Maine State Police Trooper Elisha Fowlie said at the scene. The motorcyclist was leaving the restaurant parking lot and entering Route 3 when the accident occurred.

The motorcycle was a total loss and the car, a mid-size Subaru sedan, was damaged, police said.
