Crews make progress against fires in the West
Firefighters battling home-threatening wildfires in the West were bracing for gusty winds and scorching heat Sunday.
They made progress by containing 45 percent of a four-day-old fire in California coastal canyons after 40-mph “sundowner” winds failed to materialize.
Elsewhere, crews were battling intense blazes in New Mexico, Arizona and Utah.
The threat was expected to worsen as a heat wave brought potentially record-shattering temperatures across the Southwest.
