My father was born on July 1, 1900, a date I will remember always, though he’s been gone now for a long time. That was always a happy day, as we celebrated his birth and he milked it for all it was worth, a happy occasion for us all.

Flash forward to July 1, 1989. That day was one of great sadness for a family just down the road from us. On that date, after a day’s visit to her parents here in Winthrop. a former neighbor, a lovely young woman, was killed by the roadside on her way back to her New Hampshire home. To this day, there’s been no resolution in this case, as this monster has not been found or prosecuted.

In March of this year, I read that the cold case unit closed a pending case in East Millinockett dating back to 1980. What relief the families involved must have felt.

I’m sure there is a long list of people waiting for their unresolved criminal cases to be solved. I have great respect for the men and women whose job it is to investigate these cases as my father was a New York City policeman and former chief of police in Rockland. My hopes are that this case will be resolved within the lifetime of this still-grieving mother and that our decision-makers will continue to fund and support a cold case unit’s work in our state.
