BANGOR — A man charged with killing a Maine teenager 36 years ago can be freed on $300,000 bail if his family has that much money to post.
A judge set bail Monday for Philip Scott Fournier, rejecting the state’s attempt to keep him jailed without bail pending trial.
Fournier, 55, has been jailed since his arrest in March in the death of 16-year-old Joyce McLain of East Millinocket, who disappeared while jogging in 1980.
Fournier, who pleaded not guilty, was identified as a person of interest in McLain’s death when he was sentenced to prison in 2009 for possession of child pornography.
Prosecutors say Fournier changed his story many times over the years. His lawyer has said there’s a lack of physical evidence.
