York police said two motorists got trapped in their vehicles Monday morning when their cars crashed on Route 1 near the Mountain Road intersection.

Sgt. Brian Curtin said in a news release that Kathleen Bean of Ogunquit and Brian Peters of Portland suffered injuries that were considered non-life threatening. They were extricated from their vehicles by York firefighters.

Curtin said Peters was driving a Volkswagen Jetta north when his car crossed the centerline and collided head-on with Bean’s vehicle, a Honda Pilot.

Route 1 was shut down to traffic for about two hours after the crash, which was reported around 7:30 a.m.

York police investigators and the department’s crash reconstruction team are working to determine the cause of the crash and whether charges are warranted.
