Maine State Police arrested a New Hampshire woman at a campground in Lebanon on Sunday after she had disappeared with her two children.
Brittney Adjutant, 26, of Rochester, New Hampshire, is the biological, noncustodial mother of two boys, ages 2 and 5, police said.
She picked the children up on Saturday but did not return them to their legal guardians in New Hampshire, police said. Police became concerned because they did not know what make of car she was driving and believed she had left the state.
The Middleton (New Hampshire) Police Department sought the public’s help, using media outlets and social media, and were tipped off that she had taken the children to the Salmon Falls River Camping Resort in Lebanon.
State troopers arrested Adjutant at the campground, Middleton police said in a news release posted on the department’s Facebook page. The children were returned safely to their legal guardians.
Adjutant was being held without bail Sunday night at the York County Jail in Alfred on a warrant charging her with being a fugitive from justice. She is scheduled to make an appearance Monday in Springvale District Court. She can waive extradition to New Hampshire or request that an extradition proceeding be held.
