A former superintendent in Madison will take over the job on an interim basis in Anson starting on Monday, according to the school board chairwoman of Anson-based School Administrative District 74.

Lyford Beverage was appointed by the district school board this week for a period of 485 days, said School Board Chairwoman Bobbi Sue Harrington. Beverage replaces Superintendent Ken Coville, who is leaving to become president and director of development for the Good Will-Hinckley organization in Fairfield.

“We’re excited about Mr. Beverage being our superintendent,” Harrington said. “I think he’s going to be a really good fit.”

Beverage will be paid at a rate of $500 per day and will work three to five days a week as needed, Harrington said.

She said Beverage most recently worked in the Wiscasset school district and has also worked in Madison before. He could not immediately be reached for comment Friday.

“He was more than happy to support the programs that are currently in place that our current staff has worked hard on establishing for our district,” Harrington said. “He said numerous times he wants to encourage those programs to thrive.”

SAD 74 includes the communities of Anson, Embden, New Portland and Solon.

The district has met twice in recent months with neighboring School Administrative District 59 in Madison to discuss collaboration in the wake of both districts losing superintendents this past spring. SAD 59 Superintendent Todd LeRoy resigned in March and his position has since been filled by Interim Superintendent Bonnie Levesque.

Harrington said Friday that discussions with Madison are ongoing and “we are exchanging more information but don’t have a set date for that.”

“I don’t think we’ve made any decisions yet but definitely the lines of communication are more open than they’ve been in years and I think that’s a really encouraging thing,” Harrington said. “I think we’ll definitely be working together in the future on something, I’m just not sure what positions yet.”
