WINSLOW — A Winslow woman was issued a traffic citation Thursday for driving her car through a red light at the intersection of Augusta Road and Carter Memorial Drive and colliding with another vehicle, according to police.

Bethany Bergeron, 35, of Winslow, was driving a 2008 Ford Fusion east at 9:39 a.m. on Carter Memorial Drive when her car continued moving through the red light at the intersection. Her car was then struck broadside by a 2002 Subaru Impreza driven by Marissa Ayer, 26, of Monmouth, who was heading north on Augusta Road, according to Lt. Josh Veilleux, of the Winslow Police Department.

The Fusion continued east toward China Road and stopped by the north side of the road. Bergeron was injured and taken by Delta Ambulance to Thayer Center for Health in Waterville, where she remained Thursday afternoon, he said. He did not know the extent of her injuries, but a hospital spokesman said she was listed in good condition. Ayer was not injured in the crash, Veilleux said.

Both cars were destroyed in the accident, he said. At the scene, the Fusion’s right front passenger door was bashed in and the front of the Subaru was smashed. Winslow police and firefighters worked at the scene as wreckers hauled the cars away.

Bergeron and Ayer were the sole occupants of the vehicles, according to Veilleux.

Veilleux advised motorists to proceed with caution through the intersection and to hesitate when the light turns green and look to the left and right to make sure no vehicles are coming through.

“It’s one of those intersections that we’ve always had trouble with,” he said.

The speed limit in both directions in that area is 45 mph, he said.
