SKOWHEGAN — A Skowhegan man who is barred from owning guns because of previous felony convictions was arrested early Friday morning after allegedly waving a loaded shotgun at family members, police said.

Matthew Gray, 33, of Eaton Mountain Road, was highly intoxicated when police responded to a report of a disturbance just after midnight at a home on the road, Detective Sgt. Josh King said Friday.

Sgt. Don Avery and Officer Tim Williams, of the Skowhegan police, along with a sheriff’s deputy, found when they arrived that family members had taken the shotgun from Gray and had hidden it in the basement, King said. No one was injured.

Family members told police that Gray was waving the loaded the shotgun around before it was taken away from him, King said.

When police searched Gray, they allegedly found Xanax pills. Xanax is the brand name of alprazolam, which is used to treat anxiety disorders.

Gray was charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, a class C felony. Gray has previous felony convictions for burglary in 2003 and domestic violence assault in 2012, so he is not allowed to have a firearm, according to King.

Gray also was charged with reckless conduct with a firearm, a class C felony; and with unlawful possession of a scheduled drug, Xanax, a misdemeanor, according to King. Gray also was convicted of theft in 2014 and has had several incidents of violating probation, King said.
