AUGUSTA — The Viles Arboretum teamed up with Smart Eye Care and The American Chestnut Foundation on Aug. 6 to establish one of the first restoration sites in Maine for potentially blight resistant trees of this once common forest species.

Twenty volunteers joined in the festivities along with board members of the Viles Arboretum and the executive director of the American Chestnut Foundation Lisa Thompson.

The first five trees of the newly bred resistant variety were planted in an acre field specially prepared for this and future plantings.
