WINTHROP — Shie Smith turned away a penalty kick with five minutes left to preserve Winthrop’s 3-2 win over Hall-Dale in a Mountain Valley Conference girls soccer game Tuesday.

Addie Davis converted on a penalty kick nearly five minutes earlier to pull the Bulldogs within a goal but it wasn’t enough to make up for the three goals the Ramblers scored in the first half. Freshman Jillian Schmelzer scored twice within two minutes just before halftime while Chloe Armillotti scored the other goal for the Ramblers (1-0-1).

Sabrina Freeman also scored for the Bulldogs (0-1-1). Smith finished with 10 saves in goal while Hall-Dale’s Maggie Gross had four saves.

ERSKINE 5, LEAVITT 1: Lauren Wood scored two goals to spark the Eagles to the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B win in Turner.

Kayla Hubbard added a goal and an assist for Erskine (2-0-0) while Peyton Houghton and Kaylee Porter had a goal apiece. Jaime Boudreau, Summer Hotham and Jenna Lully had one assist each. Caitlin Labbe stopped four shots.

Lindsey Desmais scored for Leavitt (1-1-0). Allie Roux and Shelby Varney combined to make five saves.

GARDINER 2, SPRUCE MOUNTAIN 0: Meghan Meehan and Lauren Chadwick scored goals 10 minutes apart in the first half and the Tigers went on to the KVAC B win in Gardiner.

Tabytha Hembree made six saves for Gardiner (1-1-0), while Calley Baker had nine stops for Spruce Mountain (0-2-0).

Leslie Stevens had an assist for the Tigers.

MT. BLUE 1, CONY 1: Haley Caswell scored with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation to earn the KVAC A tie between the Cougars and Rams in Augusta.

Lexi Goulette scored late in the first half to give Cony (0-1-1) the lead, and Gabby Low made 13 saves to preserve the tie.

Addie Schamb had four saves for Mt. Blue (0-1-1).

MONMOUTH 8, MOUNTAIN VALLEY 0: Haley Fletcher had a hat trick as the Mustangs rolled in their MVC home opener.

Fletcher also assisted on two other goals for Monmouth (2-0-0), while Emily Grandahl had two goals and an assist. Audrey Fletcher, Tia Day and Sarah Scott also scored.

Katie Harris made three saves to blank Mountain Valley (0-2-0).

FIELD HOCKEY 

CONY 5, BRUNSWICK 0: Abbie Trow scored a pair of goals as the Rams picked up their first KVAC A win of the season in Augusta.

Sophie Whitney, Kami Lambert and Delaney Keithly also scored for Cony (1-1-1), which got two assists from Cari Hopkins.

Jacki Carlton and Jessica Lee each made three saves to combine for the shutout of Brunswick (1-2-0).

BOYS SOCCER

HALL-DALE 5, WINTHROP 0: Austin Stebbins and Malcolm Avore each scored two goals to lift the Bulldogs to the MVC win.

Jett Boyer had the other goal for Hall-Dale (1-0-1) while Tyler Nadeau chipped in with two assists. Johnny Whitcomb made two saves on three shots.

Jackson Ladd made 18 saves for Winthrop (0-2-0).

MESSALONSKEE 2, EDWARD LITTLE 1: James Kouletsis converted a penalty kick with under five minutes remaining as the Eagles rallied for the KVAC A win in Auburn.

Messalonskee (2-0-0) tied the game at 1-1 when Jack Moore scored with under 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

Chase Warren made five saves to preserve the win for the Eagles.
