COLLEGES

Bates field hockey dominates in victory

Bates controlled play on both offense and defense, outshooting Worcester State 32-1 and holding them to a single penalty corner, and cruised to a 4-0 win in a non-conference game in Lewiston.

Jessie Moriarty got the Bobcats started with a goal 5:10 into the first half on a feed from Adah Lindquist and Sydney Beres added an unassisted goal with 15:38 to play in the half as Bates (1-0) took a 2-0 lead at intermission.

Isabel Garcia-Moreno and Alexandra Leahy both scored unassisted in the second half.

MEN’S SOCCER: Jackson Taylor put in the game-winner with 4.7 seconds to play as St. Joseph’s (2-1-1) edged Colby 1-0 in a non-conference game at Waterville.

SOCCER

U.S. MEN: Jozy Altidore scored twice in a three-minute span in the second half, Sacha Kljestan and Paul Arriola had goals and the United States beat Trinidad and Tobago 4-0 at Jacksonville, Florida, to reach the final round of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.

Christian Pulisic made his first U.S. start after seven appearances as a substitute, and at 17 years, 353 days became the youngest American to start a qualifier. Landon Donovan had set the mark of 18 years, 184 days against Honduras in 2001.

U.S. WOMEN: Coach Jill Ellis has emphasized that Hope Solo’s suspension stemmed from a “sum total of actions” and not just the “bunch of cowards” comments the goalkeeper made about Sweden during the Olympics.

Solo was suspended for six months and her contract with U.S. Soccer was terminated following the team’s exit from the Rio Games.

WORLD CUP: European champion Portugal failed to overcome the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo and lost 2-0 to Switzerland in a qualifying match at Geneva.

After a disappointing exit from the European Championship, Belgium began its bid to qualify under new coach Roberto Martinez with a 3-0 victory over host Cyprus.

A little-known goalkeeper, Andrei Gorbunov, had an inspired night as Belarus held European Championship finalist France to a 0-0 draw at Paris.

PARALYMPICS

RIO: With the Rio Paralympics set to begin Wednesday, organizers say ticket sales have jumped from around 200,000 to 1.6 million, and a spirit of optimism now pervades the cash-strapped event.

Organizers are selling about 40,000 tickets per day and expect to overtake Beijing’s sale of 1.7 million tickets total, making Rio the second best-attended Paralympics behind London 2012.
