What a breath of fresh air it was to read about former Sen. George Mitchell’s recent speech on immigration (”George Mitchell calls for ‘fair’ immigration limits at fundraising dinner in Waterville,” Aug. 24).

Why does America lack upstanding, sensible citizens like the former Senate majority leader? Where are these folks and why won’t they step forward to serve our country?

After spending a relaxing week in central Maine celebrating my father’s 80th birthday, I was relieved and pleased to see and interact with so many sensible, neighborly people in Maine. I sure hope you would hurry up and grow us a new crop of decent folks. We need more like the senator, pronto.

By the way, as a former Mainer who moved to Washington, D.C., more than two decades ago, I am sickened by many of the blowhards at all levels of government, many of who are intoxicated by the sound of their own voices.

I miss living in central Maine, but thank goodness for centralmaine.com, which takes me back and keeps me sane.
