The Waterville Parks and Recreation Department will participate in the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend with the opening of the Susan Childs Boat Launch and new single track mountain bike trails on Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Quarry Road Trails.

The new hand-carry boat launch is located a short walk from the Maintenance Building. The boat launch was constructed in part from donations in memory of Susan Childs, who was a local family physician, member of the Friends of Quarry Road board, and a strong believer in active outdoor living. McCormack Building Supply, Colby College Facilities Department, Colby College Crew, The Dock Guys and several volunteers were involved in making this project possible.

Recent improvements at the facility also include single-track mountain bike trails designed by Brian Alexander of Red Oak Enterprises. The Central Maine chapter of the New England Mountain Bike Association assisted with phase 1 of the mountain bike trail system.

Volunteers from Friends of Quarry Road will lead a short paddle on Messalonskee Stream starting at 1 p.m. and the Group Bike Ride will start at 2 p.m. at the Welcome Center Yurt. Bring your own equipment for these free events. No registration is needed.
