A Virginia trucker was charged with driving to endanger Monday night after driving several miles in the wrong direction on the Maine Turnpike and running into a state police cruiser, police say.
Police started receiving calls from drivers around 9:30 p.m. reporting a tractor-trailer was driving the wrong way without headlights in the Biddeford area.
Troopers were able to stop the truck in Saco after it crashed into the rear end of a cruiser. Police say they stopped the big rig after troopers had to take evasive action to avoid a head-on collision.
The trucker, 49-year-old Michael Crews of Hurt, Virginia, was charged with driving to endanger. He was taken to Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford for evaluation. The trailer portion of his truck is registered to Blue Diamond Transportation of Presque Isle. The trailer was empty.
Troopers believe Crews entered the wrong lane of the turnpike from the Kennebunk service plaza.
The trooper in the damaged cruiser was not injured. The damage to that cruiser was minor, police said.
