PORTLAND — Three Portland museums and one in Augusta will receive nearly $400,000 in federal funding for conservation and improvements.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services Museums for America program granted funds to the Maine Historical Society, the Portland Museum of Art and the Victoria Mansion. The Maine State Museum in Augusta will also receive funds.

The Maine Historical Society will receive the largest grant of nearly $150,000. The money will help the society catalog and digitize about 1,000 of the earliest photographs in Maine history.

The Victoria Mansion grant will be used to conserve walls and ceilings painted in 1859-60 by Giuseppe Guidicini.

The Maine State Museum will receive more than $85,000 to fund a long-range plan for its collections, records and archives.
