AUGUSTA — Al Cloutier, a volunteer with the Capital Area Recreation Association for 20 years, will be recognized with a Mayor’s Recognition of Excellence award at Thursday’s City Council meeting.

Capital Area Recreation Association volunteers created and maintain a large sports field complex, primarily used by youths, off Hospital Street in Augusta.

Cloutier, who also has spent more than 30 years volunteering and leading the Augusta Babe Ruth League, quietly has put in thousands of hours of service not only in coaching youth but also in helping to build and maintain the association’s sports fields complex, according to Roger Pomerleau, chairman of the committee that oversees the community service awards.

Cloutier was selected for the award because, according to Pomerleau, he has set an example of leadership and good sportsmanship for Augusta area youths.

Cloutier is scheduled to receive the award at 7 p.m. Thursday in the council chamber at Augusta City Center.
