A pair of 2017 high school state championship basketball games have been moved from Portland to the Augusta Civic Center, the Maine Principals’ Association announced Wednesday.

The Class B boys’ and girls’ state title games will be played in Augusta on Friday, March 3.

The games had been slated for Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, but the MPA was informed this summer of a scheduling conflict. Cross Insurance Arena has a two-year commitment to host America East women’s basketball tournament games on the first weekend in March.

Because of the conflict, there will be no state championship games in Portland in 2017. On Saturday, March 4, the Class AA and A championship games will be at the Augusta Civic Center, and the Class C and D finals will be at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

The Portland Expo and Cross Insurance Arena will host Class AA, A and B South regional games.

Dick Durost, the MPA’s executive director, said the Class AA and A state championship games had been scheduled for Portland in 2018 but will have to be moved because of the America East tournament. He said discussion of where those games will be played will be held when the MPA’s basketball committee meets following the 2017 tournament.
