Fall is in the air and another election season is upon us. As the Quaker representative to the Maine Council of Churches, I would like to remind voters that for democracy to flourish we need debate based on mutual respect and honesty.
The Maine Council of Churches has invited every candidate for office to sign our Covenant for Civil Discourse in which candidates agree to act respectfully, refrain from personal attacks and refuse to make untrue statements. Our nine denominations represented call on every person to treat others as they want to be treated and to speak the truth in love. We value honesty, civility and truth while striving for workable solutions. Communication has become more deceitful and more disrespectful as the election draws closer. Please look on Maine Council of Churches website to see what candidates have signed the Covenant of Civil Discourse and keep love in your heart while voting.
