Spectrum Generations Coastal Community Center, 521 Main St., in Damariscotta, will host its Wednesday Lunch and Learn program at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2.

Following the luncheon, Jody Telfair, of Bristol, will discuss the Magic, Mystery and Challenges of Bird Migration in Maine and around the world. Luncheon guests will have the opportunity to gain insights into the wonders of migration, what we know about how they do it, and the issues and challenges birds and butterflies are experiencing in their migrations today.

Telfair has chased birds all over the globe, and will share what she knows about birds and their migratory behavior, especially birds we consider “ours” in Maine. She also will share a traveler’s perspective from a coffee farm that she visited in Nicaragua (where some of “our” birds migrate for the winter). She will emphasize how we can help them succeed in their current struggle for survival.

Telfair-Richards, PhD. LCPC, teaches Tia Chi at Bubbling Brook Studio and Spectrum Generations as well working as a psychotherapist. Telfair-Richards, is a Maine Master Naturalist, Certified Wildlife Habitat Steward and a member of the Maine Audubon Society. She has traveled with binoculars to Mexico, Costa Rica, Belize, Cuba, Ecuador, and many parts of the U.S. and Canada, as well as New Zealand, India and Africa. She has participated in two week long Hog island Programs on Ornithology and Migration. Perhaps her greatest joy is planting shrubs, flowers and trees on her own land and watching the birds find and use them, whether for shelter, food or breeding.

Advanced luncheon reservations are required. Chef Perry’s entrée of the day will be baked chicken with gravy. Call 563-1363 by noon Monday, Oct. 31, to make luncheon reservation. The cost is $5 for luncheon guests older than 60. All others are $6. Those who cannot make lunch are welcome to attend the Center’s Wednesday Learn portion of the day’s Lunch and Learn program, which will begin at approximately noon.
