SKOWHEGAN — A former resident of the men’s homeless shelter on McClellan Street in Skowhegan has been indicted by a Somerset County grand jury on five criminal counts including a charge of Class A felony gross sexual assault on a woman known to him.

Rodney Horning, 41, allegedly sexually assaulted a 39-year-old woman and prevented her from yelling or calling for help, police said after his arrest Oct. 4. Detective Sgt. Josh King of the Skowhegan Police Department said the alleged victim is a family member, but would not identify her further. The Morning Sentinel does not name alleged victims of domestic violence or sexual assault.

The charge of gross sexual assault is a Class A crime, punishable by up to 30 years in prison. Horning also is charged by the grand jury with unlawful sexual contact, a charge punishable with a conviction in Maine of up to 10 years in prison. He also faces charges of domestic violence assault, obstructing the report of a crime or injury and a misdemeanor charge of unlawful sexual touching.

An indictment is not a finding of guilt, but is an indication by the grand jury that enough evidence is present in a case to proceed with formal charges and a trial.

Also indicted were the following people:

• James Dale Kitchin Jr., 39, of Waterville, charged with failure to comply with the provisions of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act in August in Skowhegan. Kitchin has two previous convictions of failure to comply with the act in March 2008 and in November 2013. The new charge is a Class B felony.
