When the price of Maine lobster crashed in 2012, the state’s lobster industry took action.

On Thursday, Matt Jacobson, executive director of the Maine Lobster Marketing Collaborative, will speak at the Winthrop Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce breakfast to explain how the marketing program works and what the lobster industry plans for the future.

When lobster prices collapsed, harvesters, dealers and processors could not make enough money to cover their costs. Some declared bankruptcy. The industry was successful in lobbying the Maine Legislature to put in place a marketing fee on lobster licenses to pay for marketing efforts, which led to the creation of the Maine Lobster Marketing Collaborative.

The event is scheduled for 7:15 a.m. Thursday at the Winthrop Commerce Center Community Room, 149 Main St. Admission for members is $7, all others $10. The public is welcome and no RSVP is required.
