Watching the debates between the candidates for the 2nd Congressional District in Maine, I am struck by the lack of knowledge of Maine on the part of Bruce Poliquin. I know he was born and raised in Waterville, but he left to attend Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and then on the Harvard. His later career as an investment banker took him to New York City and Chicago.
Poliquin continually labels his opponent Emily Cain as a “career politician” in the debates and in his ads. Apparently, Poliquin is unaware that there are no career politicians in the Maine State Legislature. Maine has a citizen legislature, and all of the legislators need to have outside employment and outside careers.
Our legislators are among the most poorly compensated in the country. Emily Cain worked at the University of Maine while she served in Augusta.
