I just heard that Gov. Paul LePage is withdrawing all state support for the federal refugee resettlement program in Maine, run by Catholic Charities. He says the program doesn’t assure safety from terrorists, but there is a years-long vetting process that terrorists would not and could not get through.
I can’t find the perfect adjective to describe his action, so let’s try inhumane, outrageous, xenophobic, bigoted, reactionary and alarmist.
This program has been exemplary, successfully integrating thousands of refugees into the fabric of Maine, making us a better, stronger, more enlightened state in the process. Instead of erecting barriers to the entry of refugees, we should be a refuge for all those fleeing conflict.
