Two people were injured Monday afternoon, including a woman who is eight months pregnant, in a two-vehicle head-on crash on U.S. Route 201A in Norridgewock, police said.

Chief Deputy James Ross, of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, said investigators spoke to several witnesses and to both drivers after the crash reported just before 5 p.m. Monday on what also is known as Madison Road.

Ross said Ashley Tetrault, 27, of Madison, was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Impala north toward Madison, when she pulled into the oncoming lane to pass a vehicle that was turning into a driveway. Dale Bickford, 24, of Smithfield, driving a 2004 Saturn, was coming the other way, southbound, when they collided, Ross said.

Tetrault’s car struck the driver’s side front fender of Bickford’s vehicle and spun into the ditch on the northbound side. Bickford’s vehicle also went into a ditch, striking a mailbox and a large tree. Ross said Tetrault was trapped in her vehicle for several minutes after the crash and was extricated by emergency medical personnel. A LifeFlight helicopter was dispatched to the area but later was turned back.

Tetrault was taken by ambulance to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan, where she was treated for a possible broken ankle and was evaluated because of other injuries as a precaution because she is pregnant.

Bickford was able to free himself from the vehicle, Ross said. He also was taken to the Skowhegan hospital with possible back and leg injuries. A hospital spokeswoman did not return calls immediately Tuesday for updates on their condition.

The road was shut down for about hour while fire units and a towing company cleaned up the road. Police still are investigating the crash.
