Sen. Angus King of Maine and several of his colleagues on the Senate Intelligence Committee are calling on President Obama to declassify information regarding the Russian government and the U.S. election.
The tersely worded one-page letter from the senators dated Nov. 29 revealed no further details on what they were seeking or why. King’s office issued a statement Wednesday alerting the media that he had participated in the effort to declassify information.
“We believe there is additional information concerning the Russian government and the U.S. election that should be declassified and released to the public,” the letter states. “We are conveying specifics through classified channels.”
The letter was signed by King and six Democrats including: Ron Wyden of Oregon, Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, Mark Warner of Virginia, Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, Mazie Hirono of Hawait and ex-officio member Jack Reed of Rhode Island. Reed, who is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, is also a non-voting member of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
