FAIRFIELD — Maine State Police are investigating a gasoline leak from a tanker truck that could potentially have covered about 30 miles from Albion to Fairfield.

State police spokesperson Steve McCausland said Wednesday that one of an Irving Oil tanker truck’s compartments that contained gasoline may have been damaged. The truck could have leaked for its full trip in the early evening Tuesday, when it traveled from either Albion or Benton to the Irving Oil gas station in Fairfield.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection went to the site Tuesday night, said David Madore, director of communications and outreach.

“Last night’s heavy rain mitigated any potential environmental impact to the area,” Madore said in an emailed statement.

The department returned Wednesday morning to look at the area of the spill in daylight, he said, and found no environmental threat.

Police are investigating what could have caused the damage to the truck compartment. No further information was available, McCausland said.
