AUGUSTA — Ron Chase, author of “The Great Mars Hill Bank Robbery,” will give a book presentation at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Lithgow Library. The library and the Unitarian Universalist Community Church have partnered to bring this free program to the library, according to a news release from the library.
“The Great Mars Hill Bank Robbery” profiles the adventure story of a Vietnam War hero, Bernard Patterson, who robbed the Northern National Bank in Mars Hill in 1971 of $110,000, at the time the largest bank robbery to ever occur in the state of Maine.
Patterson had several raucous adventures all over America and Europe, not the least of which was buying a camel and getting lost in the Sahara Desert. He is a zany criminal who enjoyed himself quite nicely, with other people’s money, before he was eventually caught by Scotland Yard.
