MACHIAS — A trial is underway for a Maine man charged with killing a couple before setting fire to their home in the northern Maine town of Oakfield.
Opening statements were delivered Tuesday in the trial of Matthew Davis in Washington County Superior Court, where the trial was moved after a judge was unable to seat a jury in Aroostook County.
Prosecutors say Davis shot Heidi Pratt, 49, and Michael Kitchen, 51, before setting the home afire and then fleeing.
The defense contends that there’s only circumstantial evidence and that prosecutors cannot prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Davis is charged with two counts of murder, along with arson, theft and aggravated criminal mischief. The killings happened in September 2013.
