Baxter’s Essentials offers candy-making demo, samples

Baxter’s Essentials, at 26 Brackett St., the home of Baxter’s Fine Candies and ReginaSpices, is holding an open house from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Baxter’s Fine Candies, which makes old-fashioned hard candies on antique equipment, will demonstrate candy-making at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

ReginaSpices will have spiced samples on hand for visitors to try, including spicy chocolate, herbed goat cheese and mulled cider. Fat Pants Bakery from Fork Food Lab will provide cookies made with ReginaSpices and Baxter’s Fine Candies.

Two Fat Cats Bakery at 47 India St. is hosting a holiday open house from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Among the holiday treats available for sampling will be sticky toffee pudding, Hanukkah apple cake, gingerbread loaf with blueberries and lemon sugar and salted pecan brittle. Hostess gifts, handmade rolling pins and bags of rum balls and peppermint bark will be available.

At Tate House, a look at Christmas past – with snacks

Take a peek into Christmas past at the Tate House Museum’s Colonial Christmas Open House, held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Docents in 18th-century attire will greet visitors to the 1755 home of Capt. George Tate, who was an affluent mast agent, and his wife, Mary. Visitors will learn about the customs of the time, including what sort of food and drink the Tates served at Christmas and why the family celebrated the holiday though many of their neighbors did not.

Sweet and savory treats will be served across the street at the Means House.

Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for children under 12.
