One of the three children injured in a crash in Gorham on Monday has died.

Narragansett Elementary fifth-grader Paige Piawlock died Wednesday night of injuries she received in a car crash Monday morning that also took the life of her father, Joseph Piawlock, 45, and injured her sister, mother and a family friend.

In a letter to parents sent out Thursday, Narragansett Principal Cynthia Remick said that Paige was a student in Mrs. Smith’s 4th and 5th-grade class. Students at the school were notified of their classmate’s death Thursday and teachers took time to talk about it with their students.

“Our collective thoughts are with the family, friends and all in our community who knew and cared for Paige,” the letter said.

The letter said school counselors and social workers would be on hand to offer support to students and staff at Narragansett School, and encouraged parents to keep an eye on their children’s emotional reactions in light of their classmate’s death.

Gorham School Superintendent Heather Perry said the school learned of Paige’s death Thursday morning from a family member around the time that classes were starting.

“We’ve been providing support to students and staff at Narragansett since this tragic event happened on Monday,” Perry said.

At least a half-dozen social workers and school counselors were on hand to help students and staff deal with their grief.

All three children who were in the car crash attended Narragansett which has about 230 total students and 20 staff.

Joseph Piawlock was a passenger in a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by his wife, Yvonne Piawlock, when the vehicle went out of control on snow-slick Narragansett Street and collided with a dump truck.

Yvonne Piawlock and the three girls were injured in the crash. Joseph Piawlock was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gorham Police Chief Dan Jones said after the accident that the three girls were sitting in the rear of the SUV, including the Piawlocks’ daughters and a family friend. Joseph Piawlock was in the front passenger seat. One of the girls – police are not certain which one – was secured in a child car seat. All three girls are from Gorham, Jones said.

“Their vehicle started to slide sideways and the dump truck broadsided them, pushing the Jeep into a telephone pole,” Jones explained. “Their vehicle sustained so much damage that the firefighters had to cut the doors off to get them out.”

The names of the girls have not been released. Jones said one girl suffered head trauma, one had a broken hip and all three had broken bones, he said.

Perry said the two other children who survived the crash have not returned to school yet, and she did not know what their conditions were.

They were taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland from the crash scene. Initially, police thought Yvonne Piawlock had minor injuries, but Jones said she sustained severe internal injuries that weren’t initially apparent.

She also remains at Maine Med in serious condition.
