A minivan driver was arrested early Sunday morning after striking two police cruisers and injuring a Yarmouth police officer on Interstate 295 in Yarmouth, police said.
At 2:51 a.m., police cruisers from Yarmouth and Freeport were at the scene of a tractor-trailer accident at mile 17, where the northbound lanes had been shut down to remove the truck, police said.
A Honda minivan operated by Connor Fitzsimmons of Topsham, which was traveling north, did not stop for the road closure and struck the cruisers, police said.
Falmouth and Cumberland police also responded to the scene.
Fitzsimmons was arrested by Cumberland police and charged with operating under the influence. He was taken to the Cumberland County Jail.
Yarmouth police Officer Derek Lukas was injured and taken to Maine Medical Center with injuries not considered life-threatening. He was treated and released.
