I enjoyed Eliot Chandler’s letter on gun problems, especially his comments on high gun possession in Switzerland and its little gun crime (”What to make of America’s gun problem,” Dec. 23).

Do you suppose that the situation there has anything to do with Switzerland’s laws mandating universal military training and service prior to age 30 and requiring that uniforms and assigned weapons be maintained and housed at home for decades after individuals are released from active service?

Just maybe familiarity with proper use and care of guns may lessen improper usage. At least the idea is worth considering, as many of our well-meaning citizens who speak strongly for gun control probably have never fired one. The more education the better.
