SKOWHEGAN — One person was treated and released from a local hospital with broken bones Wednesday night after being hit by a car as he walked along U.S. Route 2.

The accident happened on what’s also known as Canaan Road, near the Eddy of the Kennebec River, about 2 miles east of downtown Skowhegan

Skowhegan police Detective Katelyn D. Nichols, who investigated the accident, said an 18-year-old woman reported that she had struck someone walking along the road around 5:30 p.m. The woman, whom Nichols would not identify, told police she had been driving more slowly than the posted speed limit of 50 mph.

Police found a 27-year-old man lying face down in a snowbank beside the road. The man was conscious but in shock and disoriented from having been hit by the car, Nichols said in a news release. The man, whose name Nichols did not release, was taken by EMS Ambulance to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan, where he was treated and released.

Nichols said the pedestrian’s left collar bone and left ankle were broken. She said Wednesday she is not releasing names yet “for privacy for those involved.” How the accident happened is not clear, Nichols said, but speed, drugs, alcohol and cellphone distractions do not appear to have been factors. The driver was interviewed at the scene and was not charged.

The otherwise busy road was closed to all traffic for about two hours. The Maine Department of Transportation was asked to set up a detour of traffic to avoid the area while Maine State Police reconstructed the accident.
