BURNHAM — A fire Monday morning destroyed a garage on Whitten Road and killed five goats, according to an assistant chief.

The cause of the garage fire reported shortly after 8 a.m. is unknown, said Burnham Fire Assistant Chief Charlie King.

The fire at 32 Whitten Road leveled the structure, which included housing for the goats in a barn area in the back of the building. No one else was hurt. The owner, Andrew Shute, has insurance, King said.

The Burnham Fire Department was still at the scene around 10 a.m. to put out hot spots, King said, but the fire was extinguished by that time. The garage is a “total loss,” he said.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal will investigate and try to determine the cause of the fire, King said.

Troy, Unity, Pittsfield and Clinton fire departments also responded to the scene, as well as Unity ambulance.
