A bright neon piece of rock ‘n’ roll history, a marquee from the legendary Whisky a Go Go club in Los Angeles, sold for $43,000 at an auction in Biddeford on Wednesday evening.

Floyd Hartford, the auctioneer who owns Saco River Auction Co., said several people and representatives of Hollywood celebrities bid on the sign, including the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, but he wouldn’t know until Thursday who submitted the winning offer.

“It was a pretty hot item,” Hartford said.

Though the selling price was $43,000, Hartford said, by the time the buyer adds in taxes and surcharges, the price might end up being $45,000 or more.

The 13-foot-tall sign, with letters alight in bright pink, adorned the West Hollywood club in the 1980s and 1990s. It simply says “The Whisky.”
