As a constiuent of Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-1st District, it saddens me that she doesn’t care enough about her position to represent her district and state. The inauguration of a new president, and the peaceful transfer of power, is a remarkable moment in history that few of us will ever have the opportunity to witness in person. Even when the president may have not been our choice, it still is an amazing process of freedom.

That’s why it was so disappointing to read that Pingree intentionally chose to skip this year’s ceremony in protest of the incoming administration. That’s the action of a sore loser, not a leader who was elected with votes from Democrats, independents, and Republicans.

Ever since his election, Democrats have complained that Trump needs to change his rhetoric and reach out to those he offended during the campaign.

If Democrats want the president to work with them, then they need to be there when he reaches out his hand. By choosing not to attend the inauguration ceremonies, Pingree has only proven that she’s willing to put partisan politics above all. I hope this is her last term in Congress.
