Amazon recently reported greatly increased sales of George Orwell’s dystopian novel “1984.” This is no big surprise given the Trump administration’s use of “newspeak,” as in “alternative facts,” and their efforts to create “memory holes” into which they want facts, scientific data and historical realities to disappear.

Orwell’s novel is well worth reading to get a sense of what human political systems can become.

I would like to recommend another novel worth reading given the realities we are facing in this country with Donald Trump as president.

I urge people to read “It Can’t Happen Here” by Sinclair Lewis. Written in 1935 during the rise of Hitler in Nazi Germany, it takes place right here in the U.S. and is both prescient and frightening in how accurately it describes Trump’s rise to power and what could actually take place in this country if the citizenry is not vigilant and does not resist the acquisition and consolidation of power in one man’s hands.

Please read this book and take it seriously, because it can happen here.
